THE NEWS: TresemmA[c] Fresh Start Waterless Foam Shampoo ($4.95) claims to remove up to 75 percent of excess oil from dry hair, reduce frizz, and add shine without the need for rinsing or brushing.
HOW IT WORKS: When this lightweight foam is dabbed on dry roots, a mild cleanser called TEA-lauryl sulfate surrounds oily residue and odor molecules on the scalp and hair; blotting the head gently with a towel then lifts them away. The foam can also be raked through the hair to absorb excess styling products and reduce frizz. The company says that by eliminating oil and product residue, the foam leaves hair looking shinier.
THE VERDICT: "This is a really simple but smart product," says cosmetic chemist Ron Robinson of beautystat.com. "It's essentially a very diluted shampoo that is able to clean away oil and dirt without the need to add water. For women with curly hair who don't use powdered dry shampoos because they require brushing, this could be especially useful." In our test, it made a coworker's curls look less oily, didn't leave them wet, and left behind a fresh scent.
