The reference is looking a the past and history, but the theme is ricocheting today's environment. For example, the climate of a cold and deary place is projected in a distance future time; based on past narrative immediate past-historical fiction.
The narrative is not deporting themselves in the past and future; but the narrative is giving an idea of the future outcomes; based on past gray areas.
