It seems like a high price to pay for years of holiday indulgence, but overweight policemen in the northern Philippines reportedly have been ordered to climb the Mount Pinatubo volcano as part of a fitness campaign. Those with waists over 34 inches are making twice-weekly climbs from April through June, and will face dismissal if they fail to slim down by October. The trek takes 2.5 hours, during which the officers are accompanied by medical staff. Are the police in danger? "If they've been sedentary or not aerobically conditioned, there may be unidentified risks," Dr. William Forgey, a family physician in Merrillville, Ind., told Indications. Dr. Forgey, who specializes in wilderness medicine, added that the age of the officers also is a factor. But the pudgy police should consider themselves lucky in one respect: They would have had a longer climb 10 years ago, before the catastrophic explosion of June 1991 lopped 984 feet off the volcano's height.
