Attached to a hospital, an existing nursing home took on many of its institutional traits. In contrast, a new design solution creates a place that is home, a place where residents have their choice between spaces of intimacy and places of community. Connections to the outdoors, so valued by members of this northern Wisconsin community, are maximized through day-lighting and views to natural surroundings.
The design concept breaks down the 50 rooms into two neighborhoods, each with five clusters of five resident rooms opening directly onto semiprivate living spaces consisting of a den, sitting area, activity area, nurse desk and laundry/linen room. In the center of each neighborhood are dining rooms which offer intimate spaces that serve meals to 12 to 16 residents. The dining rooms can also be joined together for large annual gatherings accommodating up to 100 residents and family members. The overall result is an environment that minimizes corridors and maximizes a variety of social spaces supporting whatever style of living the resident desires.
Views of the wooded areas and lakefront are in abundance within this community and result in a wealth of daylight, proven to be essential to the well-being of residents. The experience of the outdoors is also enhanced through a variety of outdoor courtyards, gardens, and children's play areas, helping this design fulfill the definition of home in this community.
Jury comment: The commitment to culture change and resident involvement is impressive.
